Huckleberry (Organic)

Bears fruit the first year! Garden Huckleberry (Solanum melanocerasum) grows on bushy, 3- to 4-ft tall plants that are very productive. The small purple-black berries are unpleasant when eaten raw, but transform into a tasty delight when cooked and sweetened. Great in jams and pies! (75-80 days from transplant) CERTIFIED ORGANIC

Planting and Harvesting Tips:
Start plants indoors 4-8 weeks prior to the last frost of spring. Surface sow or barely cover with soil to speed germination. Keep planting trays warm and do not allow to dry out — keep moist! Transplant outside after the soil has warmed. Space seedlings two feet apart in all directions.

Harvest after fruits turn from shiny to dull black, and the flesh is soft. Fruits are tasteless when raw and unsweetened, but delicious when made into pies and preserves. For best flavor, add 1 pound of berries to 1/2 cup of sugar.
