Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI)
|
The Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI) is a nonprofit organization started in 1997 by organic certification agencies. Its mission is to provide professional, independent, and transparent review of materials allowed to produce, process, and handle organic food and fiber. OMRI's information services are designed to assist certifiers, growers, handlers, processors, and suppliers in determining the compatibility of generic materials and brand name products for organic production under the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) Rule and other international standards. Within this regulatory framework, OMRI serves the industry in the role of an advisory and educational support agency.
Through its Brand Name Review Program, OMRI publishes the OMRI Brand Name Products List (BNPL). The BNPL is a compilation of brand name products suitable for use in organic production, processing and handling. Products included on the BNPL have been reviewed against standards developed by OMRI for assessing compliance with the NOP rule. Only those products that have passed this review are included in the BNPL and can display the OMRI Listed seal on product labels and in advertising and promotion.
The products in this department are OMRI Listed for use in organic production. To the best of our knowledge this list is up to date. However, the web version of the OMRI Brand Name Products List has the most up to date information and status regarding listed products.
Note: Does this mean that if a product is not listed by OMRI that it can not be used by organic growers? No, it does not. OMRI is a private company. To have a product reviewed by OMRI costs money. OMRI charges application and review fees. Also, to continue to be listed on the OMRI Brand Name Products List, a company must pay an annual renewal fee. Many companies cannot justify the cost of being OMRI listed. To stay current with the NOP guidelines that may affect a materials organic status/or a materials use, organic growers should check the USDA National Organic Program website for updates.
