Frequently Asked Questions
How long can mealworms last?
These live mealworms can last up to nine months depending on moisture, feed, and temperature conditions.
How do I store mealworms at home after delivery?
After receiving your order, place them in a plastic container; a container about the size of a shoebox is good for approximately 500 mealworms. Apply bedding material (e.g. oatmeal, wheat bran, etc.) to your container before placing them in the container.
They’ll also need hydration, but don’t apply water as it can cause molding. Instead, drop in slices of potatoes, oranges, apples, or any other juicy fruit or vegetable to ensure their survival.
Unless you’re trying to breed mealworms, they should be stored in the warmest part of the refrigerator, which is usually the door. This will cause them to go dormant, which will inhibit their metamorphosis into a pupa. Clear instructions are provided with every order.
How do I feed live mealworms to pets?
Even though you’ll place food for them to feed on, refrigerated mealworms will naturally lose some nutritional value if kept mostly dormant for multiple weeks. In this situation, ‘gut load’ them before feeding them to your pets. This involves feeding your worms nutritional food before offering them to your pets.
You can offer your pets mealworms the day you gut load them or the day after. Remove the mealworms from the fridge and allow them to come to room temperature first.
What happens if the mealworms die during transit?
This is rare but it does happen from time to time. In the event that the worms are dead on arrival just send us a photo of the dead worms and we will get another shipment sent out.
