Grow your own coffee beans with this tropical houseplant! The Dwarf Coffee Plant (Coffea arabica nana) grows up to 4-feet tall and produces small, extremely fragrant, jasmine-scented flowers. These yield a yellow berry which contains the seeds, which when roasted are “coffee beans.”
Soak seeds for 24 hours prior to planting. Sow into coarse, well-drained, somewhat acidic sandy soil. Place seed 1/2 to 3/4 inches deep, flat side down and cover with potting mix. Keep at 60-70 degrees F. Germination is erratic and may take 4 months. Moisture must be maintained until sprouts appear.
Grow in full sun or under bright grow lights and avoid extremes in temperatures (below 50 or above 85 degrees will harm plants). Plants will produce flowers after 2 to 3 years.
