I would recommend the Sulfur Plant Fungicide. It can be applied as a powder or spray, is inexpensive and is registered for use on roses. Here’s a link:

I have heard of spraying DE on plants… but have no experience doing so myself. Add 1/4 cup per gallon of water and apply to areas where pests are present.

KeymasterHello,
Definitely slow down on the watering. I water mine only when the soil gets dry. I stick my finger all the way down to the knuckle, if I feel any moisture I hold off. I wouldn’t transplant it at this point, just make sure it is never sitting in water. You may also want to check your soils pH, as citrus trees prefer acid conditions.
For the gnats, I would recommend a product we sell called go gnats or another product called SNS 203, both will control this issue for you. Both work as a soil drench to kill the gnat’s eggs.
You’re right that you don’t need to fertilize in the fall or winter. In the spring I would recommend a fruit tree fertilizer from Dr. Earth. It is granular, and releases more slowly so you don’t have to worry about burning your plants.
Good Luck

KeymasterZach,
Think of the the top soil the top most layer, and ideally contains organic matter and a diverse microbial selection. Worm castings are not the same as top soil, but they could be added to help increase the organic matter. Combining worm castings with a compost tea, in order to inoculate your medium, would get you the best.
Alternatively, you could dig up some topsoil in your area and just add it to mixture. However, this may have contaminants like weeds that can be competitive.
Good Luck!

KeymasterCatherine,
There are many plants that are self pollinating, that do not require a pollinator because the male and female reproductive organs are in the same flower. Some examples of which are tomatoes and peppers. For plants that require a pollinator, I always use an old electric toothbrush. I’ve read that the vibration mimics the actions of bees. I’ve also rubbed flowers with cotton swabs with success.
This link should help too!

KeymasterHello Martin,
I wouldn’t recommend FloraNova grow in the Aerogarden. I am afraid that it is too viscus of a product. I would recommend Kind Grow or the FloraGro series; the latter I have used personally in an aerogrden with success.
With just lettuce, only a grow product will be needed. If you want to branch out with peppers or tomatoes, a series of nutrients will be required.
Best of Luck!

KeymasterHello Linda,
When looking for seeds, you’re goal will be to find the crops with the shortest growing season. Packages are labeled with the number of days until harvest, and you want that number to be as small as possible! If your temperatures stay low throughout the summer, leafy greens are going to be your best friends. Plants with the longer day requirements may go into your greenhouse for the season.
As for the greenhouse, my best idea would to build a permanent structure with a solid door and locks. Using an alternative material to glass could be something to consider.
Best of luck!

KeymasterHi Glenn –
Beneficial Nematodes (Skanmask®) will over winter in most conditions, but it is probably better to wait until spring if the pests are not active right now.
Note: The producer of our Beneficial Nematodes states that they can be applied anytime the ground is not frozen, and are compatible with all other organic products.

KeymasterHello Cathy,
The most important thing when considering soil for citrus is drainage. The black gold will work for you, but you will need to add either ceder shavings, coco palm, or perlite in a 1:3 ratio with the potting mix. Here at the store, we used coco palm for this. This won’t be needed for the fig, they will do well in normal potting soil.

KeymasterHello Trudy,
It sounds to me like you are fighting Powder Mildew disease. I’ve attached a link below that should help. Also, is the mini rose in the same container that you purchased it in? If so, I would replant it and consider giving it a light feeding. Have you checked for pests around the plant? Insects like spider mites can also cause the symptoms you’re describing. How is the moisture? Roses like moist soil, but not soggy.

KeymasterHello,
Apples are perfectly fine to put in a compost pile or bin. Composting produces high temperatures which will exceed the acceptable range for the worms, thus killing the pest. Make sure to turn your pile often and keep it moist to ensure this process. I’ve included a link to a page that will help with what to use… or not!

KeymasterHello Beck,
Tanglefoot may work for you, it is a very strong physical barrier. You may also consider watering infested plants with insecticidal soap or adding diatomaceous earth to kill the pests in the soil itself.
Hope this helps.

KeymasterHello Katie,
You certainly can grow herbs and veggies in the winter. Good options for your SE window include rosemary, sage, mint, and many other herbs. Some veggies you might want to consider are peppers, which are perennials and can flower right through winter. Greens should work by the window, but may do even better on the table you plan on putting in. In lower light areas of your house, consider growing sprouts. Here’s a couple of links that should help.

KeymasterDear Linda,
We sell cat repellent that you can sprinkle on your plants that can help with this issue. You may also want to consider a rough mulch to put on top and I have also heard that citrus oil or orange peel is unpleasant from them to dig in.
Hope this helps!

KeymasterDear Yanni,
I am not sure exactly what is wrong with your roses. Rose Curculios is a pest that can cause the problem you are describing, but this typically only happens in the spring. If you haven’t fed them in some time, I would give them a good blooming fertilizer like Buddha Bloom.
Here’s a link to our rose problems page.
https://www.planetnatural.com/rose-gardening-guru/pests-disease/
Hope it helps!
Eric Vinje
KeymasterHello Tammy,
I would recommend Buddha Grow and Buddha Bloom for your plants. This is an organic liquid fertilizer you mix with water, and what I personally use on all my indoor plants. Your plants shouldn’t need to be fed more than once a month. For soil, I would recommend either Black Gold Potting soil, or Roots Organic Potting soil. The latter drains better, but both are great.
Hope this helps!

Fly Parasites should be released whenever pest flies are present at the following rates:
• large animals (horse, cow, etc.) – 500 parasites per animal
• medium animals (sheep, goat, etc.) – 250 parasites per animal
• small animals (birds, rabbits, etc.) – 5 parasites per animal
• manure/compost piles – 5 parasites per cubic footFor best results, start releasing before flies become a problem!

KeymasterHello,
The California Department of Food and Agriculture which requires inspection of fertilizers. Morbloom has trace levels of metals. Fish emulsion, which is a main ingredient in this product, often has trace levels of metals. Morbloom’s levels of metals all fall within the acceptable ppm; more information can be found at http://www.aapfco.org/metals.htm. Morbloom is a product of Lilly Miller Brands.
Thank you.

KeymasterHello,
Leaf miner is controlled most simply with a combination of sticky traps, and floating row covers. The sticky traps catch the adults, and the cover prevents the laying of eggs. Additionally, parasitic wasps specifically for this pest are available. We have a whole page dedicated to this problem:

KeymasterHello Lori,
There are quite a few options for you. I have done a simple hydroponic system using Floragrow, Floramicro, and Florabloom by General Hydroponics. There is an organic line from General Organics called BioThrive Grow and BioThrive Bloom that may also work for you. However, these lines may require supplemental nutrients to fulfill your plants requirements (e.g silicon for your tomatoes).
Good Luck!

KeymasterHello Deborah,
Unfortunately, there is not a specific statement of where and what type of corn this product is sourced from. You may have luck inquiring within the products company, Safer. If you are worried about the spread of Roundup ready genes, there is no risk in a product in this form.
Hope this helps!

Yes that would work! Ladybugs move in quickly and will consume many of the immature stages and then, in many cases, move on. Lacewing tend to stick around a bit longer providing long-term control. I’ve provided a link below.
https://www.planetnatural.com/pest-problem-solver/houseplant-pests/whitefly-control/
You may also want to consider Encarsia formosa. These tiny parasitic wasps are the most cost effective biological control agent to control greenhouse whiteflies.

KeymasterHello Mitch,
Growing tropical plants in Montana can be tough! In a small office your best option would be a T5 (Tubular ⅝”) lighting system. These systems are immensely efficient, producing almost 100 lumens per watt while limiting heat production (which is just wasted energy). This means that you can put your more light demanding plants very close to the source, without worrying about burn. T5 bulbs are also long lasting, having a 10,000 hour life and come in vegetative and blooming spectrums.
Good luck!
