  • What is topsoil?

    Created by zach on

What is topsoil besides the obvious top few layers of soil. I am doing an indoor organic grow and my soil recipe calls for 10% top soil. What is it made of how do I get it? Is it worm castings? Can I use worm castings?

    Zach,

Think of the the top soil the top most layer, and ideally contains organic matter and a diverse microbial selection. Worm castings are not the same as top soil, but they could be added to help increase the organic matter. Combining worm castings with a compost tea, in order to inoculate your medium, would get you the best.

Alternatively, you could dig up some topsoil in your area and just add it to mixture. However, this may have contaminants like weeds that can be competitive.

    Good Luck!
