    No, the worms won't make it in weather that's colder that 30 degrees. Ideally your worm compost bin should be in an environment where the temperature ranges between 40 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit and red worms generally prefer temperatures in the 55 to 77 degree range. If your composting correctly, your bin shouldn't smell, so some people do bring their bins inside. But that's a personal preference.     Just a note: If you do rewire or modify anything on your ballast is does void the warranty. Ballasts that have both usually have a plastic covering that can be rotated 180 degrees to place the opening over the 240 socket and close the 120 volt socket. If your not sure your best bet would be to purchase a new ballast that has this option like the Xtrasun ballasts.

    It if fine to compost the apples. Your compost pile should be hot enough that it would kill any pests or diseases.

    You can use a lawn mower, string trimmer, or leaf shredder to chop up plant material. I would think the lawn mower would be the cheapest way to shred, since you probably already have one. You might need to raise the mower's cutting height and then just run over the material a few times.
