A crowded perennial border can make fall feel like the obvious time to divide everything. But a spade is not a seasonal reset button. Dividing cuts roots, asks a plant to rebuild them, and puts the new pieces at the
Fungus gnats are easy to overlook while houseplants are outdoors. Small dark adults disappear into a busy patio scene, rain changes the moisture pattern, and other insects compete for attention. Once the same pot moves into a warm home with
A brown perennial bed can look like one big fall chore. It is not. Some material is worth removing promptly, some can be shortened when it flops into a path, and some earns its winter place as seed, structure, or

Bulb displays arrive when summer is still warm, which can make a gardener feel behind before the first bag reaches the cart. Buying in September is smart, the choices are wide, the labels are easier to compare, and you have
A frost warning can make a productive fall garden look like an emergency. It usually is not—at least, not for every bed. Some vegetables need to come inside before frost touches them. Others tolerate a light frost, and a few
