  • Feeding Bone Meal to Ruminants (Deer)

    Created by Matt on

I’ve been using bone meal to mix in with other minerals to feed my deer herd during the spring/summer months. My local soil health is poor, all the minerals are leached into the bedrock, so all grazing animals LOVE calcium/phosphorous rich nutrients. I only recently noticed your DO NOT FEED TO RUMINANTS message, but everywhere else I research says its fine to incorporate bone meal into agricultural feed. Could you clarify? I haven’t observed any health detriments to my herd using your product…

    Hi Matt –

To the best of my knowledge, the statement “DO NOT FEED TO RUMINANTS” is over concerns that Blood and Bone Meal may have been responsible for the spread of mad cow disease. U.S. Food and Drug Administration officials are obviously concerned and want to minimize the chance of animals eating the feed ending up back in the cattle food chain.

    Hope it helps!
