A fast growing, short season annual, Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) is used as a warm-season cover crop. Use to add valuable organic matter to the soil, prevent erosion, discourage weeds, attract beneficial insects — ladybugs, parasitic wasps and hoverflies — and help maintain soil moisture levels.
Tip: It’s a good idea to mow your cover crop just before turning it back into the soil. This will encourage faster decomposition.
Available size: 1/4 lb (4 oz)
Plant anytime in warm weather (4 oz per 100 sq ft) and till into the soil when flowering begins, usually 4-6 weeks. May be planted and tilled under several times in a summer.
