Tumbleweed Compost Bin - Helpful Hints
What is the difference between mulch and compost? Only the degree of decomposition. Mulch has partially broken down ingredients in it, whereas compost is the end result and looks like soil.
Why mulch instead of compost? Most gardeners want mulch, not compost (soil). Mulch is simply added to the top of the garden in a layer 1 – 2 inches deep. This helps to maintain soil moisture, keeps soil temperature consistent, protects the surface roots of the plant, discourages weed growth and gradually feeds the plant. It also attracts worms as it is a source of food for them.
Why is my compost lumpy? This is usually because the bin has not been turned frequently enough. Sometimes it may be due to excessive moisture. If it is due to the latter add shredded newspaper to correct the balance.
Why is my compost heavy and wet? Vegetable scraps have a high proportion of water. If you have used more than 20% in proportion to grass cuttings and other ingredients, this may be the problem. Fix it by adding shredded newspaper.
Why does my compost smell? A foul smell indicates that anaerobic decomposition (without oxygen) is taking place. This can be caused by not tumbling (insufficient aeration). It may also be due to a combination of not tumbling and too much moisture. The best remedy is to empty it out and start again
Why is my compost hot? This is not a problem. Heat is required for the decomposition process and it indicates that your compost is "cooking" beautifully!
