Sluggo - FAQ

What is Sluggo?
Sluggo is a truly organic compound used to control slugs and snails. It was developed in Europe and is the first new slug and snail control product in the U.S., since metaldehyde. Sluggo's active ingredient is iron phosphate, which is actually a plant nutrient. It also controls snails and slugs. Much of the research work to develop the product in the United States was done by California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

What are the advantages of using Sluggo?
Sluggo can be used around pets and wild life without adverse effects. It also remains effective after rainfall or irrigation. Sluggo can also be used in vegetable gardens at all times. Metaldehyde can only be used until fruit begins to form on the plants. If Sluggo bait is not eaten by the slugs and snails, it will biodegrade in the soil, back to fertilizer (iron and phosphate).

How does Sluggo work?
The bait is attractive to snails and slugs and lures them from their hiding places. Once eaten by the snail or slug, they stop eating the plants and will die within 3-6 days. Unlike metaldehyde, dead snails may not be visible (since they crawl away to hide and die). Sluggo is slower acting than metaldehyde, but once eaten, the snails and slugs stop feeding so damage to the plants stop immediately.

Where can I use Sluggo?
Ornamental plantings, ground covers, fruit trees, citrus trees, berries, vegetables (even up to the day of harvest), lawn areas, greenhouses, etc.

How and when to apply?
Since snails and slugs feed mostly at night, evening is the best time to apply. Apply bait evenly at about 1 lb. per 1,000 square feet (1 teaspoon per square yard). Re-apply as bait is consumed. Scatter the bait around or near the desired plants. In potted plants, apply 1/2 teaspoon per 9-inch pot.

Is Sluggo expensive?
Sluggo is more expensive than other snail and slug products based on metaldehyde. However, because it can be used around pets and wildlife it will be worth the additional expense.
