Fertilizers & Seed Starting
Excerpt from Your Organic Garden by Jeff Cox
Most seedlings respond well to a weak "starter solution," which provides a quick dose of readily available nutrients. Starter solutions helps young plants recover quickly from shock of transplanting. Try one of these.
Fish Emulsion and Seaweed Extract
Mix 1/2 cup fish emulsion and 1/2 cup seaweed extract together in a disposable container. Pour into a jar or bottle, seal tightly, and store in a dark cool place. To use, add 3 tablespoons of starter solution to 1 gallon of water. Use as a soil drench at transplanting time or as a spray for foliar feeding.
Manure Tea
If you have a readily available source of poultry, horse, or cow manure, try this starter solution for your young transplants. Fill a large barrel, garbage can, or other waterproof container one-eighth full of manure. Then fill the container to the top with water. Allow it to steep for a day or two; stir the mixture several times during this period. Dip out the liquid with a clean can and dilute it with water to a light amber color. Water each transplant with clear water, then pour about a cup of this solution around the base of each. Repeat at 10 to 14 day intervals to encourage vigorous growth.
