Restore Cleaning Products - FAQ
Q: How are the products made?
A: Restore Natural Cleaning Products are made from renewable, plant based ingredients like soy, orange, coconut, and corn, and abundant minerals. We use no petroleum based ingredients, which makes our products more sustainable and better for the environment. Our renewable ingredients are gray water, septic and sewer safe. The ingredients are readily biodegradable and do not create toxic by products when they degrade. Our ingredients are petroleum free, so unlike most other cleaning products, they do not create pollution from the transportation and refinement of petroleum.
Q: What makes them different from other cleaning products?
A: Unlike many conventional cleaners on grocery store shelves and in commercial cleaning closets, Restore products contain no hazardous ingredients as defined by OSHA and contain no known or suspected carcinogens. Many cleaning products contain petroleum solvents, chlorine, ammonia, phosphates or alcohol, butyl ethers or other ingredients that can give off toxic fumes, can irritate the skin, or are even carcinogenic. Restore products are designed to be safer to use, and made within an acceptable pH range, so as not to burn your hands or poison your child. When tested against 23 other manufacturers who claimed to have environmentally safer products, Restore Products rated the highest overall score on performance, safety, and environmental standards. We believe that Restore products are some of the safest, most effective, earth friendly cleaning products in the world.
Q: How long have the products been on the market?
A: Restore Natural Cleaning Products were developed over 10 years ago as our private label line in our retail store. Our customers came directly to us with their cleaning problems and also with their feedback about our products. Through this dialog with our customers we've really learned a lot -- and with every suggestion, we've continually made our products better. That's why Restore products are proven performance leaders in government tests of safe cleaners and have continually attracted more customers who love the way they clean.
Questions About General Cleaning
Q: How do I remove mold from my bathroom fixtures?
A: Controlling the humidity in your bathroom is the key to preventing mold. Make sure you have a fan that vents to the outside of the bathroom and that you use it when taking a shower or bath. To remove the mold that has developed, use a weak solution of bleach (1 part bleach to 5 parts water) and apply it to area where there is mold. Even though we do not like to use bleach, with mold, it is the only sure solution to eliminating it. Please use gloves and make sure the area is well ventilated. If it is on the grout, apply to grout with small brush and let sit. Scrub the area afterward with diluted All Purpose Cleaner. Rinse. Remember that the mold will return if the moisture problem or humidity is not corrected.
Q: We have very hard water, how do I remove the lime and scale buildup on my fiberglass shower and door?
A: Spray or apply with rag until well coated the Restore Bathroom Lime & Scale Remover. Let sit on surface for 30 minutes or longer. Keep surface wet by reapplying more product if necessary. You may need to re-apply and repeat process for stubborn lime & scale buildup. Rinse well with plain water. For ongoing problems and to prevent scale buildup, use Bathroom Lime & Scale Remover between regular cleanings with All Purpose Cleaner or Spray & Clean. Remember Bathroom Lime & Scale Remover must be rinsed and is for use only where mineral buildup is the problem.
Questions About Kitchen & Specialty
Q: How can I safely clean my oven without burning my hands and inhaling noxious fumes?
A: Restore Natural Oven Cleaner is designed to do a good job without the hazardous ingredients. But like any tough job, oven cleaning is never easy. It is important to apply the product liberally to the inside of the oven and the oven grates. The product can sit from 30 minutes to overnight, depending on the severity of the problem. After letting Restore loosen the grease and soot, scrub with a fine steel wool or 3-M pad designed to pick up the gunk, without scratching the surfaces. This process may have to be repeated. This formula has worked very well in commercial kitchens where oven cleaning is a weekly job. In order to best maintain your oven, wipe up spills between use and even use Restore Natural Oven Cleaner immediately after a spill or splatter occurs. With this safer oven cleaner, you can use this product safely and more often for grills, stove tops, Jenn Airs, hoods and the inside of ovens. Be careful not to get Oven Cleaner on painted or wood surface. While Restore Natural Oven Cleaner is safer than most , it is still not intended for other surfaces.
Q: Do cleaning products that produce more suds do a better job?
A: Sudsing has nothing to do with cleaning power. Mainstream marketing gurus have made believers out of the suds phenomenon -- that more suds means better performance. That just isn't true. We, at Restore, add far less sudsing agents to our Dish Detergent because it doesn't improve the product, it costs more money to make, and it irritates and dries our customers' hands. Yes, we know, suds are a powerful reassurance, but just try our products, they really work, without so much suds.
Questions About Bath & Beauty
Q: My hands and body seemed to get very chapped and dry from washing them. Could it be the hand soap I use?
A: For people with sensitive skin, it's hard to continually be washing their hands or skin. The irritation of the water alone, when done repeatedly, can be irritating. Yet authorities tell us to wash regularly when we're cooking, eating or waiting on others. That's how germs spread and families get sick. Restore Gentle Soap is a time tested product that really works to get skin clean without the drying action of other products. Our ingredients are really gentle, and we've got the testimonials to prove it.
Q: Don't I need to clean my hands and home with a disinfectant?
A: Restore products do not use antibacterial ingredients. Routine housecleaning and hand washing are surely necessary, but standard soaps and detergents decrease the numbers of potentially troublesome bacteria, without creating long lasting residues that increase the growth of resistant strains. Recent articles and interviews have revealed what some scientists have been saying all along, "that the average consumer does not need to use disinfectants for everyday normal cleaning of their homes or their bodies." A Scientific American article in March 1998 called the antibacterial fad a new threat and stated that "there is no evidence that the addition of antibacterials to household products wards off infections. What is clear," the article goes on to say, "is that the proliferation of products containing them raises public health concerns." According to Dr. Stuart Levy at the Tufts School of Medicine in Boston, antibacterials' claims are misleading. "I've seen no evidence to show that they work nor that they have a health benefit." Scientific American goes on to say, "if we go overboard and try to establish a sterile environment, we will find ourselves co-habitating with highly resistant strains of bacteria. Then when we really need to create a more sterile environment -- like when a family member returns home from the hospital and is vulnerable to infection -- we will encounter resistant bacteria, making our homes, like our hospitals, havens of ineradicable disease producing bacteria."
