Depending on where you live, the time of year, and where you want your garden, the sun may not always be available to you. Now, with Hydrofarm's sun-like high intensity lighting, you can grow any plant, anywhere, anytime you choose!
Everyone is familiar with the fluorescent tube as a grow light. Fluorescents are fine for some situations and in fact, we recommend them for seedlings and low-light plants. Unfortunately, fluorescents just can't deliver the strong light you need to grow plants taller than 6-8". A pair of fluorescent tubes put out about 4,000 to 5,000 lumens of light energy - enough for less than a foot of effective light penetration. A single Hydrofarm High Intensity Light can emit over 100,000 lumens - good for up to six feet of effective light penetration. And, because you can keep your light so far above your plants, a single light can cover a much greater area.
Halide and Sodium: The Two Types of Grow Lights Favored By Growers
The more popular Halides emit a full and complete spectrum of light. Their balanced blue-white light provides plants with everything they need for healthy growth and flowering. Halide light is pleasing and comfortable to work around. The light quality and intensity is so good you can grow any plant indoors - no greenhouse or sunlight is required!
Sodiums put out a light that can be compared to the golden hue of an autumn sunset. The light quality is predominately in the yellow/orange/red area of the spectrum. The addition of sodium light enhances flowering in many crops. They are the preferred addition where some other light exists such as in a greenhouse or along with a halide light. Most home gardeners, however, select halides because of their more balanced and comfortable light spectrum.
