Measuring Your Light Output
We recommend you check your bulb periodically with a Hydrofarm Light Meter. Footcandles measure the intensity of the light energy received on a leaf's surface. Lumens are the measure of energy your bulb puts out to create the footcandles received. Footcandles are affected by how far away the bulb is from where you're measuring. As the bulb ages, the lumens drop, the intensity lessens, and the footcandles reading goes lower. For maximum growing efficiency, as a rule of thumb, Halide bulbs should be replaced after about one and a half years of normal use, and Sodium bulbs after about two years.
