Greenhouse Location & Site Preparation
Site Location
When choosing a location for your greenhouse, your top priorities should be a level and clear area that receives maximum exposure to the sun. This is especially important for fall and winter gardening. If possible, locate the greenhouse where it will receive a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight per day during the winter months. If additional light is required, grow lights can be installed to supplement light requirements for the greenhouse. A good site is also sheltered from high winds, close to water and electricity, and easily accessible from your home and garden.
Site Orientation
Ideally, a greenhouse should receive the maximum amount of direct sunlight without excessive shading. Experts recommend that the length of the greenhouse run east to west to allow for the greatest surface area with a southern exposure.
Site Preparation
Very little site preparation is required. Greenhouses can be placed directly on your lawn, on a gravel base, over a wood deck, on a concrete slab, or a brick patio. We recommend a gravel floor for the best drainage. Simply find an area in your yard that gets plenty of sunlight and level the ground. Lay down landscape cloth over the surface to prevent weeds in your greenhouse while allowing necessary drainage. Pour about 3 inch of compacted 1/4 inch gravel base on top for added drainage and a sturdier floor.
