Fungus Gnat Predator Release Instructions

Fungus gnats (Sciaridae) are difficult horticultural pests, particularly to young plant material. They can cause damage to seedlings, young transplants, and cuttings of many plant species. Fungus gnats are found mainly in damp humus environments, and can cause both direct and indirect damage. The legless transparent larvae (up to 8 mm long), with distinctive black heads cause direct damage. These larvae feed mainly on rotting, dead plant tissues, algae, and fungi present in the ground. However, in humid conditions, young roots and other soft plant tissues are directly affected. Young cuttings are especially susceptible to attack at the cutting surface. The resulting damage can cause wilting and stunting of the growth and with severe infestations, a considerable portion of the plants may be lost.

The grayish black adult flies (2 to 5 mm), with long antennae, feed very little during their short lives. Both the adult flies and larvae can cause indirect damage through the dissemination of diseases, viruses, harmful nematodes, and mites, which can cause additional loss of plant material.

After the application, fungus gnat predators actively search for the fungus gnat larvae and attack them. The predators pierce the larvae and feed on their contents. For optimal performance, the soil temperature should be at a minimum of 59 degrees F and the ground should be relatively moist.

Fungus gnat predators can be applied to most crops in which fungus gnats pose a problem. In greenhouses, fungus gnats occur throughout the entire year. Predators can be applied as soon as fungus gnat larvae or damage is observed, though a preventative introduction is recommended when there is a risk of significant damage. Always apply fungus gnat predators to the soil surface, not on the plant.

Fungus gnat predators are supplied in a 1 liter bottle containing 10,000 mites. Depending on the infestation level, each bottle will treat 200 to 1000 square feet. Predators should be applied as soon as possible after delivery. Turn and shake the bottle gently before use. Spread the material evenly on soil or rockwool blocks. Do not apply in pothole close to stem. If necessary, fungus gnat predators can be stored for 1 to 2 days in a cool, dark place (50 to 60 degrees F).
