Getting the Most Out Of Your Hive

With Koppert's bumblebees and hives, you achieve the best pollination results possible. This is a claim we feel justified in making. But if you want the very best pollination, follow the user instructions carefully.
"The quality of pollination depends on four factors," explains Koppert's specialist Remco Huverman. "First of all, choosing the bumblebees. Koppert selects only the very best, year in, year out. Better performance is therefore inherent in the genes of our bumblebees. You can see it in the higher pollination capacity and the minimal early waste. A lively and reliable population is the result."
A second factor is the production. Koppert still produces the best bumblebees according to strict protocols. "But we also manage the product so that the population is starting to expand by the time it is dispatched to the client. This gives long-term maximum pollination."
The Hive is the third factor. Some years ago, Koppert increased the volume of the hive by 20 percent, giving the population more space for reproducing, feeding and resting. "Our hives are 25 percent larger. Furthermore, we supply extra large hives for crops under supplementary light. Here early bumblebee losses are higher than in unlit cultivation. Thanks to a larger hive, a bigger population lasts longer. That is a major benefit to the grower."
Koppert has less influence on the fourth factor: Will the user follow the instructions? "The best way it to place the hives on special hive supports, preferably not stacked," says Remco. "If you have to stack them, place the openings in different directions. And choose a shady position. In the summer, we regularly saw the consequences of placing the hives I too warm a location. A high death toll among the bees was the result." Service does not affect pollination, but it is important, in Remco's view. "Our service is fast and flexible and we provide all the necessary information."
