Aphid Predator Release Instructions
Aphid predators (Aphidoletes aphidimyza) are active at night. In their search for aphid colonies, they are led by the smell of honeydew. Female predators lay small eggs near aphid colonies. After 2-3 days tiny, bright orange larvae emerge and begin feeding on aphids. The full-grown larvae are about 3 mm long. Pupation takes place in the soil. Later new aphid predators will appear from the pupae.
Aphid predators are shipped as black pupae mixed with vermiculite and should be released as soon as possible after delivery. If immediate release is inconvenient, you may store the predators in the refrigerator but not for more than 24 hours. DO NOT FREEZE.
To release, simply tumble the container to mix the contents and place the material in little heaps (about one capful) around infested plants. The material should remain there for a few days, so that the adult aphid predators are given the chance to emerge and establish themselves in the crop. Introduce extra predators around aphid hot spots. Repeat releases weekly for 3 weeks.
